Confocal Imaging Facility

Overview of Services

PLEASE email me directly,  glaevsky(at)princeton(dot)edu, for any training requests.

The Confocal Microscopy Facility provides researchers with the ability to visualize a variety of samples, from monolayers and small organisms, such as developing fly and fish embryos, to very thick sections from brain and other organ tissues.

This is accomplished using a variety of optical imaging modalities, including laser point (LSCM) and field scanning confocal (CSU), light-sheet (LSFM), Total Internal Reflectance Fluorescence (TIRF), Multi Photon (MP), and Widefield (WF).

These technologies provide us with the highest light microscope resolution obtainable, giving the scientist a clearer picture of macro, cellular, and subcellular structure and function.

We can image single or multiple labeled specimens, using magnifications from 4X to 150X with a temporal resolution up to 400 fps. Our laboratory has experience imaging in mammalian cells, yeast cells, Drosophila and Zebrafish embryos and ovaries, bacteria, sections of brain and other tissues, in both fixed and live specimens.

Quantitative imaging methods such as FRAP, FLIP, and FRET are available. The laboratory also maintains several workstations with software packages for image processing, analysis, and 3D image reconstruction.

Getting Started

  • Princeton Clients: If you already have an account, log in (upper right corner) and go to the Request Services or Schedule Equipment tabs.  If you are a new user, log in (upper right corner) using a valid Princeton ID.
  • Non-Princeton Clients: If you already have an account, log in (upper right corner) with approved iLab credentials.  If you are a new external user, Register to setup an iLab account
  • Visit the iLab Help Site or Customer Help Manual for further guidance using iLab's Core Facility Services.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

It is important to properly acknowledge you use of the Confocal Imaging Facility in your work and publications. Acknowledgement allows us to demonstrate the platform's contribution to research, helps us justify ongoing costs, and in securing future funding for new instruments and technology to further support your research.

If your publication makes use of the platform for image acquisition, analysis, or support, please use a general statement in the acknowledgements section, such as below:

"Imaging was performed with support from the Confocal Imaging Facility, a Nikon Center of Excellence, in the Department of Molecular Biology at Princeton University." or "We would like to thank the Confocal Imaging Facility, a Nikon Center of Excellence, in the Department of Molecular Biology at Princeton University for instrument use and technical advice."

Additionally, if CIF staff have made significant contributions to your publication, they should be acknowledged in the acknowledgements or by co-authorship, depending on the level of intellectual contribution.
